Education plays a crucial role in determining
a quality of a person’s life and their opportunities.
Education is one of the main, and most important components
of the Dwelling Places program. It’s our goal to provide
each child on the program with quality education that will
equip them with the skills they need for a brighter future.
We evaluate every child in the program and develop an education
strategy that will meet their individual needs. The children
who come from the streets, slum areas, vulnerable families
in the community and young teenage mothers go through the
interim school before joining mainstream
schools.

Interim School is the bridge between street
life and formal mainstream education. Upon joining Dwelling
Places a child is assessed and placed on an accelerated
education program to help him/her catch up with children
in his/her age group. The child spends no more than two
years in the school which is located at our headquarters
in Mutundwe-Kampala District. Children are taught education
disciplines such as classroom behavior; reading and writing;
and respect for both teachers and fellow students. We aim
to see that every child is able to be integrated into the
same classes as children in his/her age group after the
two years in the Interim School. However, for some children
who have never attended school or have been out of school
for many years, interim education might take longer and
even when completed they may be enrolled in a lower level.

Formal Education: Enrolling a child into
a particular school depends on the child’s goals and
needs. Children who have learning difficulties or are significantly
behind their age group are placed in schools that offer
remedial classes. Older children who are struggling academically
or are teenage parents are often placed in vocational training
schools. Those with aspirations of joining University are
placed in secondary schools that are able to prepare them
for higher education. We partner and work alongside 18 local
schools to supervise each child’s education and to
ensure the provision of a quality education. These schools
include specialized schools for children with disabilities,
day/boarding schools, and vocational institutions.
School Fees: In both Interim and Formal education children
are provided with school fees, school requirements and guidance.
In order to provide each child with an education we look
for sponsors to provide money for school fees and to walk
alongside these children to offer them encouragement through
letters and correspondences. To learn more about how to

of poverty for one child in need.
