The purpose of the Family Empowerment Program (FEP)
is to give families the skills and the education
that is needed to provide a loving, supportive atmosphere
for their children. When children are identified as being
vulnerable or on the streets they are taken into the Dwelling
Places Transitional Rehabilitation Home (TRH). It is our
hopes that within two years of their stay at TRH that we
can reunite them with their family unit. During those two
years we focus on the parents or immediate relatives of
these children and teach them income-generating projects
and educate them on standards for raising a healthy child.
We purpose to reduce the number of children found
begging on the streets through:
- Imparting developmental and constructive skills and
knowledge to parents/guardians
- Ensuring positive behavioral change among members of
the family units
- Improving the social and economic wellbeing of Families
Our services include:
- Counseling
- Skills training (tailoring, crafts, etc)
- Health advice and education on disease prevention
- Adult literacy classes
- Temporary and/or permanent housing in a safe neighbourhood
- Free Medical treatment for highly vulnerable families
- Family visits and follow-ups by social worker
Currently the Family Empowerment Program works with 150 families throughout
Kampala and the surrounding area.
Rebuilders Club
The Rebuilders Club addresses the needs of those children that are preparing
to be resettled with their families or for independent living after spending
time in the Transitional Rehabilitation Home. It is our goal that every
child will be resettled with their immediate families or living independently
by age 18. In order to achieve this goal Dwelling Places begins working
with children in our care at age 13 by teaching them income-generating
activities and skills to become self-reliant.
Children who enter our program know that it is only a temporary fix and
that the main goal is to be able to empower their families to be able
to accept them back into their care. Once a child turns 18 if his/her
family is not capable of taking care of that child he/she will be sent
for independent living. They will remain on the program and receive counselling,
monthly visits, money for rent, food and education until the age of 20.
